This is an antique imitation dZi bead made from bowenite and most likely coming from China. As a result of being worn and handled they are usually found with very faint decoration because it has rubbed off over time. This shows that the decoration does not penetrate deep into the surface of the bead and indicates they are not decorated in the same way as true dZi beads. Here the stone is merely chemically stained on the surface. Five eyes can still be seen on this bead but quite often there is no sign of any eyes or decoration on the bead. They are believed to be 19th C creations and this particular bead was collected in India in the 1970s.
